How much sleep do kids need?

Every living creature needs sleep and for children sleep is the primary activity of the brain during early stages of life. Sleep is required to help with the physical and mental development of the body. By the age of 2, most children have spent more time asleep then awake. As children move out of infancy, sleep it still very important. You might even be surprised!
The hours of sleep do differ for each child, but here are some general guidelines from the National Sleep Foundation on how long children should sleep for:
- Ages 3-5: 11-13 hours
- Ages 5-12: 10-11 hours
- Ages 11-17: 9.5-9.25 hours
Other Sleep Tips that are useful when trying to establish healthy sleep habits in children include:
- Maintaining a regular and consistent sleep schedule
- Establishing a relaxing and calming bedtime routine
- Creating a healthy sleep environment (i.e. a cool, quite, and dark room)
