Tips to maintain your heart health at any age

Heart disease is one of the biggest health concerns, accounting for 1 in every 4 deaths according to the CDC. The good news is it is also preventable!

The following tips will help you maintain good heart health at any age: 

1. Keep your weight in check: If you are overweight, work on losing excess pounds to cut your risk of heart disease. Managing your weight can be taken in small steps - eat mindfully, avoid unconcious eating, fill your plate with colour and limit/avoid highly refinded foods.

2. Kick your bad health habits: we can all pick up bad habits, bringing awareness to where you need to make improvements is a great first step. Limit your alcohol intake, quit smoking, switch up TV time with evening walks, and build new habits that create positive change.

3. Eat a well balanced diet: Diet is one of the biggest factors that can help decrease your risk of heart disease and keep your heart healthy and strong.Include a daily variety of fruits and vegetables such as colourful red peppers, dark leafy greens, bright lemons to add a zesty taste while improving nutritional content. Make sure to include protein and healthy fats, such as extra virgin olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds.

4. Focus on a healthy lifestyle:Combine all of these tips with an active lifestyle, minimize your stress levels and have a regular sleep schedule. Creating lifestyle habits that you can be consistent with is what will get and keep your health at an optimal level. Include movement that you enjoy, take stretching breaks from work, and find 10 minutes daily to unplug from technology.
